Diving right into it. Last, last Fri (12-6) was a cool and special show at a place called Rick’s Billiards out in Putnam CT. Cool, cuz Lifetribe -- who I hooked a Safari gig up with -- was kind enough to return the favor with this gig along with Tripwire, another cool new hard rock CT band. Special, in that it was Dave Avery’s last gig temp’ing for us/Slugworth as we searched for a new drummer. The place has got great pool tables and a cool staff and all that. It was, as usual, a mental Friday night. Everyone delivered the rock goods. Lifetribe even whipped out a cover of The Beasties', "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn". Funny shit. Tripwire's singer is pretty out there.
So as luck would have it -- in timing and all that -- slugworth has their new drummer. Mark Ray. He’s Jay Quinn’s (slug-bass) roommate. HE was away from the drum thang for a while and has been DJ’ing but he def hasn’t forgotten how to bang. So, thru the next month we’ll be getting him up to speed so we can get back on the circuit in full force. In the meantime I’ll prob be do’n some Satyr guit/vocal things.
This past Fri night I checked out that new underground deal in Only-Ville (nice). Very cool. A shitload of core scenesters were on hand as Vic Foley, The Mercy Beat and Sasquatch and his boys rocked it out. It’s good to have a "secret" place like that out there under the regulatory radar. Hope it lasts. I especially want to thanks Jamie/Diablo from Sasquatch for the guest pass. It was cool to because it was food drive. Ok, I know I forgot my can of tuna in the car but hey, when Juls (slug-photographer and local area poet/writer), JJ (saxophone extraordinaire of Screaming Under Stars former fame and currently of Fred’s Bowling Ball + adds on-call sax for Vic F. + usually can be found blow’n Wed.’s at Billy K. & Vic’s open Blues thang at The Century) & I showed up we were pretty way-gone and I’ll be damned if I couldn’t find that friggin can in my Jeep. Sorry.
At a safari gig a few ago one of the Baylies members passed me their disc. They’ve been out & around for a while cuz I see the name advertised quite a bit. Been listening to the CD for a few weeks now and I gotta say they’re def into the art of experimental rock noise. I’d be surprised if they weren’t pretty influenced by Sonic Youth. Cool dissonant mixes of sounds and spliced in stuff like answering machine pieces, etc. It’s pretty spooky to listen to late a night with the lights out stoned. I did that. Freaky. If they’re going for that then they’ve achieved the goal. It’s pretty refreshing and different. Very decent recording quality done at, hmmm, looking for it in the very cool multi-panel jacket. Well, I see it was Mastered by Ron Poitras. These guys, from checking thru the liner’s def have a sense of humor. It’s good production too, 9 cuts. They hail from the vicinity; out by New Bedford way.
Chris Campbell: Guitar Jay Paiva: Drugs & Repercussions (see, humor, that’s their words) Eric Baylies: Bass/Vocals
Besides an address I don’t see any web or other contact info. Hmmm, if anyone’s got it, send it.
There’s a ton of guest playa’s listed, too. |

Satyr, the madman behind Slugworth, used to regularly publish an email known as his "Local Rock Report". It was frequently informative, always mis-typed, and chock full o Satyr's wisdom. Satyr has since moved on to other pastures, and we have archived some of his Rock Reports here so future generations may bask in the glow. |
