Holy shit it’s like 25 degrees out today. Fucking heat wave! So, as the subject says this is a special advance Rock Report but I’ll do the weekend recap here and now.

OK, so despite the mental cold last Friday night the die-hard local support came out for the very cool local Donnybrook benefit gig. I arrived just as Ripwikit started, well, ripping it up. Everyone delivered. I don’t think I’d seen Rubicon before but they had it very together to add to the all heavy rock evening. C-60 I hadn’t seen in a while so it was good to catch a full set from then. Then of course the ever faithful Carrion core to the bone local rock set kicked things up to the anticipation of Donnybrook.

Donnybrook wrapped things up with major appreciation for the current outpouring of support in the continuing aftermath of their car wreck by laying down the new songs they’ve assembled featured on their new EP. As anticipated, Nick/Lamotta filled in for the Maine recovering Jeremy on drums. Fantastic job at that. It was lucky that he was already very familiar with the tunes. I don’t think there’s been a Donnybrrook show that I’ve been at where Nick wasn’t there also and that’s a shitload of shows over the past 4 years or so. Of course he’s also got the skills so it was a no-brainer. Very cool point in the set when Josh called Jeremy via cell and had the crowd scream out to him.

So of course everyone noticed Daigle was not present onstage but was on the scene. I had just learned shortly before arriving that he’s no longer in Donnybrook. I had talked with him briefly during Ripwikits set and it’s going to be details unto Donnybrook on that so you’re not going to get any and that’s that. There’s no bad blood that I can speak of and anyone who’s been in this gig for anytime like myself knows that shit always changes. One just hopes it’s for the right reasons.

Speaking of changes and Donnybrooks sound and possible links can only be guessed at (but why do that) it was a pissed ending to the Dbrook set when Josh blasted detracting message leavers on their site for evidently saying Donnybrook "can’t play heavy" (Josh onstage quote) anymore, etc etc.

Ya know that kind of crap really is so fucking ridiculous from people that I rarely ever give it the time of day. I can site a recent detraction even towards myself that was recently posted on the "Crazed Rock Fan" (crazedrockfan@hotmail.com) board that was so out of line and stupid that even a family member of said detractor E’d me apologizing on their behalf. I would’ve loved to post it and retaliate harshly and all that but ya know it’s better not even to play in those games because everyone on the scene, true fans of local original rock, know the real score.

Donnybrook, like any band that stays together, evolves and makes music on their own terms. If you’re a fan of new directions or not then fine, whatever. I personally totally dig the new tunes. There are more well structured, light-years superior in the vocals and depth of the meanings and have a more melodic hard edge with better creativity. The songs on the EP that you’ve been hearing out now for a bit are better than ever. You decide for yourself but don’t immaturely bash local musicians who work hard to bring you a night of true rock. It just makes you look stupid and the legion of smart local rock heads are only going to come down on you anyway. Despite all that Donnybrook is still one of the most pummeling bands around and they reminded everyone of that during the encore when they whipped out one of their old classics that blurs the line of the sound barrier and rattles the teeth. Awesome.

So it was cool to see everyone Friday night. Let’s keep it up through this winter shit.

Saturday we/slugworth were practicing and partying late into the night so I wasn’t at the clubs. We’ve got our new drummer prepped and ready to go for his debut Sat.

And that brings me to...

PRE-WEEKEND SPECIAL SHOW PLUG + SPECIAL WEEKEND SHOW ADVANCE PLUG

First off, part of the reason for this Rock Report advance is to know that tomorrow/Thurs night is going to be the wrap-up gig for the John Tierney & the Truth Green Room gigs. As many know JTT had been doing the Thurs night residency their af6ter Spogga’s run but now it’s time for them to make a change and run a different agenda. So as with any beginning or end to a theme or event it’s shaping up to be a big bash. JTT always delivers an excellent performance and it’s just a great time to hang out with them and friends so git on down there.

TOMORROW NIGHT / THURSDAY:

Here’s your other special advance show notice. As you’ve been hearing we have our new mystery drummer all set to go. Mystery? Why? Glad you asked. We imported him from Denmark actually. Ok, no. Name: Mark Ray. The deal is he started playing drums when he was 6 but then went off them a while back so never really got into a local rock band. He’s been DJ’ing (still does) but is slugworths bass players (Jay Quinn) roommate and so ya know how it goes. We needed a drummer there he was/is and wa-la.

So come on out this Sat night (I hear it may rain/mix but at least the temps will be in the 40’s!!!) to The Living Room to welcome him to the scene. We’ll be on at 11:00. Thanks out to Jesus Candy for organizing the bill. At this writing I’m not sure who the replacement band is for Tripwire.

Coming in at furious angle. Yes, I am on the local music move. Shit, after last night, that was tough being near a TV, you can only take so much 911 remembrance without getting pissed and down all at once. Especially when they bring out the kids.

Satyr, the madman behind Slugworth, used to regularly publish an email known as his "Local Rock Report". It was frequently informative, always mis-typed, and chock full o Satyr's wisdom. Satyr has since moved on to other pastures, and we have archived some of his Rock Reports here so future generations may bask in the glow.
