Spock's Brain is very happy. While I dont generally like loud loud music and I did sigh a little when I got the assignment, I have to admit I had a great time.

The first band was Blacklist Union, and they reminded me of a cross between Danzig and Rob Zombie... although that's probably not accurate because heavy music is not really part of my lexicon. (Spock's Brain likes softer sounds mostly.) But these guys were really good and the singer actually sang, which is a good thing. Their stage presence is good, and the bassist is a monster, not just in skill, but in size. I think he brought in all the band's equipment himself. the only part that freaked me out was the way they all kept spitting on the stage like baseball players. Weird.

Okay, can I say now that Cats is really freakin loud?! Spocks Brain must remember ear plugs next time, to protect this delicate grey matter.

Heretic's Fork is another thing completely. heavy and throbbing is a good word. and it describes my head right now. They're heavy like Blacklist Union, but more like The Doors in a strange way. their songs are more open and ambient; with long passages of droning percussion and bass, guitar weaving in and out with lots of reverb. Sometimes its too much; but most times, its simply hypnotic.

The Cringe is a different breed of cat altogether. Their music is a little bit old school punk wih some nice Guns and Roses and even some Nirvana flavors thrown in. I cant even begin to describe their lead singer, Paul. I heard someone from one of the other bands describe him as a cross between Freddy Mercury and Johnny Rotten; and that only covers his musical performance. In between songs he tears into the audience, attemping to piss them off. It can't really be described in text, it has to be seen. And Spock's Brain has never seen anyhing like it. The first song, after all, ended with Paul's pants and underwear down and him screaming, "this is my ass! Who wants to fuck me in the ass? I heard someone say, 'fuck you'; well, here's your chance!" Then, he finishes it off with, "I bet you didn't wake up this morning and expect to see my ass!"

No, I didn't. But strangely enough, I'm happy I did.
