DOUBLE HEADER TWO DAY SOC/IMPRIMT CD RELEASE LAST FRI./SAT.
So that was, as we say, a wicked pissa Friday & Saturday local rock double CD release blow-out! As intended I did hit both shows with strategic timing. Let’s go to the big memory board.
Green Room Friday August 27th:
The Line up was:
Headlining: Imprint / www.imprintmusic.com Before them: State of Corruption / http://www.stateofcorruption.com/ Before them: Donnybrook / www.donnybrookbrew.com Opening: Inner Self Lost: I believe they don’t have a site yet
Nice summer night. Hot, but for the most part the AC was doing it’s job in The Green Room. Arrived around 9:45. Some of the SOC crew hanging outside. My first mission before my buzz really stared to kick in was to secure the new State O’ Corruption and Imprint CD. Took care of that and of course continued to spread the new slugworth CD ("45 Gallup." [now available at Tower Records, New Bury Comics and other fine retail record outlets. Even Wallmart. Except the complete opposite of that as in not]) around and about in return. I’ve listened to about 2 tracks each on those disks so far (see "Local CD Reviews" below for more agenda on that).
Inner Self Lost was getting in go mode and I was just getting in the groove thru most of their set so I didn’t get a full focus on them but I recall it rock’n. Plenty of good crowd, old and new faces. Ex-slug drum Dave Avery was on hand. He doesn’t get down much so that was cool and said he’s into a new band thing.
Mention: Brian from I.S.L. told that their drummer totaled his ride in an accident before the show. Chk it:
"Yeah, my drummer was in a car accident on the way home from work that night... totaled his car. He'd rather play with a bum shoulder than back out on a gig. Poor guy... he's a trooper. Talk about dedication!"
I’d say that’s dedication all right.
Donnybrook up second and I officially immersed myself in their set as also done with SOC. Donnybrook has been and continues to get into an extremely focused zone. Nick (former Lamotta drums and now Eryss [that still going?]) joined on drums for some songs as he now traditionally does.
SOC, Sounding as cool as ever and testing out the new material; the crowd was a bit held back near the bar area. Decent draw but mellow but later Fasad/SOC pointed out it was an "older" crowd. Family/friends down to see them for the CD release plus the non-all ages status. Eh, I still say move up to the front. Regardless, great set. When you’ve been do’n it for 10 years (reminds me that 10 years of slugworth is coming up in Feb. 2005 [Wow]) you have you’re crowd fav’s and it’s always something to introduce the new stuff. I liked the balance. We did get in a usual rousing crowd participated now traditional "Beer for Everyman" closer. Josh/DBrook joined them for 2-Pac’s/Dre’s "California" to. Cool
Imprint wrapped it up and I made it thru about almost half their set. Imprint brings it on with explosive true do or die passion and growth as performers and song writers.
I love these 3 bands (Inner Self Lost still new and first time I’ve seen) and a prefect local rock fan night. On we go.
Ryan on sound that night. As always thanks for letting me help mix.
The Living Room Saturday night August 28th:
The Header: State of Corruption And before them: Imprint And so on: shed / www.shed.net B-4 dem: Mastamindz / I’m sure they have a website but why isn’t in my Local Band data base damnit! And of course I don’t have the CD handy right now. Sue me. Opening: Blackstone Valley Crew / www.blackstonevalleycrew.com
I did the right thing and chilled for the good part of Saturday day so I could do the nocturnal local rock enthusiast thing again. The theme weather wise was hot & classic RI muggy. And of course we know, although the Living Room is seeing great renovations in sound and sanitation, that the AC doesn’t crank their. Meaning it’s not there at all. I’ve been on that stage for plenty of humid hot shows and this one was a scorcher up there.
Wait, there was actually a couple of wall mounted AC’s going but funny because, come on, the square footage in The L.R. Here’s how Joe Moody of Danger Recording Studios (see below to record your music) put it in an email to me today: "You gotta love that 5,000 BTU a/c in the back of the club, though. Like trying to empty out lake Michigan with an eyedropper."
Joe is so very articulate and savvy with the figures of speech aye?
I arrived about 9:45 to catch the end of Blackstone valley Crews set. I’m pretty sure they have at least one new member since I last saw them. Bass? Just arriving couldn’t really focus. Tough, opening but cool to do it. Mastaminz next. Super into it and tight! Sounded friggin amazing. Started to get the crowd go’n as the night began to roll. Very motivated to catch them again.
Next up, Providence legends shed. Of course I got way into that. Crushingly brilliant as always. And compliments to Anthony Palumbo of Carrion who debuted as the temp 2nd guitar position. Damn good job (see Advertising below for shed seeks permanent guitar). Oh and when Dave Lysik commented (as all the bands did because it was sweltering up there) how hot it was onstage and I yelled out "Like Nicole Richie" and he replied "No, Dave (my "real" name), Nicole Richie is not hot." I think he missed my joke referring to Nicole Richie’s now made famous by H. Stern sound-clip of her answer to everything "That’s hot." Funny moment.
Next up Imprint. I had just seen them hours before so it was cool to already be getting into their new stuff and knowing it. And as I did Friday night had to jet half-way thru their set because I’m like 60 now so I’ve gotta pace myself especially seeing as I was at The Green Fri. night. It’s all in the timing. So I floated out on the sounds of them rocking and then just popped in their CD. Easy.
So, how’s SOC do that night? Caught their whole set Fri. night/Green so didn’t want to O.D. + see that previous "old" statement. Of course I’m exaggerating because I’m only 50. Right.
Cool to see mix master Joe Moody in the house also.
OK, next.
Oh yeah and small typo in Gulla’s/Phoenix column covering this show. Mario is not (ex-shed); on the bass for SOC. He be do’n both. Correctamundo.
SATYRS OPEN MIC AT MAX’S UPSTAIRS ON THAYER ST.
So Brown University is almost back. Who-ray. This means Max & I are plotting the date for the satyr Open Mic series. My favorite watering hole on the east side and the best place to catch the games. Traditionally we’ve done this on Tue nights but of course with the baseball fervor going on right now we’re going to wait till Oct because the sox are on every Tue night in Sept. We’ve had great nights with musicians like Gary & Jaymz/Imprint, Kris Hansen, Jesus Candy, Terrance Fallon (former co-host until he & Max had a falling out of sorts [why can’t we all just get along as Rodney King once said before doing crack again and getting pulled over sans the beating that time]), Spyce (seeking roommate see Advertising below), Jenn Kitten (also former co-host and yet again see another falling out of sorts with Max [Trend?]), former bass playa from Sasquatch, and many mo’.
So stay tuned on that schedule.
SLUGWORTH NEWS AND SCHEDULE
So this past weekend many of you were asking for the next slugworth show. Got it. Here it be:
Sept 23rd / Lucky Dog / 21+ / 508-363-1888 Probably like six bucks www.luckydogmusic.com
Mullet Head: 80’s Hair Metal cover band. These guys go the distance and put on the full gimmick!! You have to see it to appreciate it and bonus the songs sound flawless. Ratt, Scorpions, Van Halen, Billy Idol, Quiet Riot, etc etc Kiss Tribute Band / Almost Human: Haven’t seen them but hey, should be cool. Interestingly enough: Female fronted Slugworth / 2nd slot = be there by 9:30 There is an opener but don’t have the name yet Note: Chk out Ralph’s that night
Every band and fan I’ve had up to The L. Dog aggress. This place is way underrated to Providence. So very cool of an atmosphere. And the sound is tops! And The Sox will be playing Baltimore at Fenway. Game time 7:00 that night and yes, the game will be on as the proprietor (Eric Godin) is a big Sox fan.
We’re trying to space our shows out a bit more and still trying to do the business thing more and I really would like to be getting with my band mates more than an hour and a half jam per week just to get thru the jamming part but that really isn’t happening. Frustrating but as said I’ve got an agenda and I can’t force things on people. Summers ending and maybe that’ll bring about change that should back up the new CD by way of promoting as much as possible with a full force. Regardless slugworth has a great time together and we continue to impress ourselves with fantastic new songs and we do tentatively have the idea to go back into Danger to play with Joe Moody’s new toys and record a small batch of obviously superior tunes even to the current "45 Gallup" tracks.
To keep my jam busy in-between our recent toned down frequency of jams I look forward to arranging some get together from some of you who have responded recently to my need to play with real live musicians more regularly. I’ll try and set these up very soon. I’ve got that and 2 other major project ideas brewing. And that brings us to the next.
O wait, before we blast into the next I did talk with Charlie H. at The Living Room today and I have a date for Oct 7th I have to run by my homies. We haven’t been back there since we did the randy tribute in March so it’s about time. It’ll be my 45th Living Room gig (wow, heading towards 50! Is that like the Silver Anniversary or something?). I think I’ll have control booking the whole night. We’ll headline it. I’ll put the word out. It’s a Thursday night. Cool enough for me. Haven’t played a Thurs night in ages there but can work out getting people out that can’t wait for Fri. night. I’m down.
Also we’re hoping to score another Allston-Boston O’Briens show. Very cool bar-club.
ALL STAR LOCAL COVER SHOW
This is an ambitious idea I’ve been cultivating and been getting cool response on. I think I have enough people on board now let’s see if I can flesh it out and get the agenda to work. With any luck I’ll have the proposed details down this weekend and it can move forward. Stay tuned and thanks for the responses. At this point I’ll be sending out specific E’s and calls to the musicians interested.
SATYR’S FALL AFTERNOON LOCAL BAND HOUSE BASH
If I want to do this the afternoon of Sat the 25th I’d best finalize the bands by this weekend so we can get the advertising blitzing. I’ve got the bands, maybe a couple of more. 23 days till that weekend so that should be enough to create a buzz and let everybody know.
GET ON THE SATYR ROCK REPORT
So this email currently reaches about 200 peoplall nicely broken down by such categories as RI/MA/CT bands, Radio, News, Management but I always want more so if you know of someone who is a local music fanatic like me then make sure you get their email to me so I can get them on board.
And as always be reminded that my ever organized data-base of all things local music is available on request. I’ve got clubs, bands, radio, etc etc all pretty damn well organized.
LOCAL CD REVIEWS
Cuz I did a double whammy last Fri. & Sat for the SOC/Imprint Green Room/Living Room I think I’ll actually stay in this weekend pretty much so I can catch up on the CD’s listed below and really crank them up and listen without distraction. Plus I’ve got a ton of general local music biz and endeavors to hash out as you can see from reading this Rock Report. I’ve been just starting to get into the new SOC and Imprint CD so I can only comment thus far that they sound like professional step-above productions. Sat. morning I plan on going thru all my CD’s and re-organizing them. I’ve got a shitload of local CD’s and I one point I had them in decent order but of course that got shot. Hell, I still have to un-bury the Days Unknown CD from my summer bash in July.
I added Delphine (Hey Todd, how was that?).
News on these CD’s forthcoming: Delphine State of Corruption Imprint (Actually listening to this CD right now as I spell check [The CD’s intent is to break you down in a good way. Heavy, heavy, heavy, bring it on!!]) Sasquatch and the Sick-a-Billies The Motormags Days Unknown Jon Tierney and the Truth Rebecca Nurse

Spyce Needs a Roommate:
Anyone who knows me knows how cool I am & how I'd be a great person to live with, right? I can't believe it's so hard to find a roommate! Maybe I've been looking in the wrong places, so now I will send this out to people that actually know me.
And if you've been to my place, you know it's great! So please pass this on to anyone & everyone that you can think of!
thanks,
Spyce
Lovely spacious apt to share right off of Broadway in Providence, approx .5 mile from downtown, easy highway access, nice quiet neighborhood, secure parking, storage, huge yard w/ beautiful garden. hardwood floors, medium size room with closet, 2 windows, & a ceiling fan. No indoor cig smoking, 420 ok, some pets allowed. 375 + split utilities, which include cable internet & phone. Cable TV is available in your room, but I do not have it. The place is mostly furnished & can either stay that way or can be switched around to accommodate things you might have. There are technically 3 bedrooms, but the 3rd room is used as another common area.
I am 30, female, creative, friendly, communicative, professional, laid back, open minded, rather clean & would like to find someone similar or at least responsible & respectful. The place is usually quiet, I but do have friends over, & occasionally have parties. I’m busy, but like to have home be a comfy place to come back to.
I'd prefer a female, but may be open if the right person is not. Queer friendly. 21+ Available Now! wikiddork@cox.net

Satyr, the madman behind Slugworth, used to regularly publish an email known as his "Local Rock Report". It was frequently informative, always mis-typed, and chock full o Satyr's wisdom. Satyr has since moved on to other pastures, and we have archived some of his Rock Reports here so future generations may bask in the glow. |
