KillHenry Sugar became the minimalist, streamlined vehicle for thisongoing discourse; think "Gangs Of New York" (book, not movie) meets"Metropolis" (movie, not book). They spent the latter 1990s as sessionmusicians for the likes of Joan Osborne, Natalie Merchant and Yazbek. In 1999, the two decided to go off on their own and now perform as thedrum/dobro duo Kill Henry Sugar, creating modern folk music from theroots of gotham. Much of the material for their latest release wasinspired by the epic timeline of life in the boroughs. Recording tookplace in the basement of Della Penna's grandmother's Bronx apartment, among silver gelatin prints of generations past. The songs aresnapshots of New York life painted in stark, vivid tones -- thecorruption of Tammany Hall politics; the muted spirit of the huddledmasses; the power and paranoia of the modern metropolis. An early copyof the CD made it to folk icon Joan Baez. She described the recordingsas "exquisite compositions, stunningly performed without a net," andwas inspired to add two of the songs to her distinguished repertoire.Soon after, Ms. Baez saw the duo perform, and Kill Henry Sugar wasasked to be the backing band for her 2007 summer tour. Della Pennalikes to describe their sound as "early Felliniesque NortheasternAmericana" or "New York ennui." Popular Music for Today's ActiveLifestyles appeared in spring 2000. Three years later, Kill HenrySugar crafted a slick jazz-rock fusion for their third album Sell ThisPlace. Aside from recording, Kill Henry Sugar have shared dates withJohn Doe, Dave Spalding and Pell Mell.
